1/9/2009 Lee S. Johnson Associates Inc. Celebrates 25 years!
“As the company celebrates its 25th anniversary and as I reflect back on my past 17 years with the company I am overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude, humbleness and a touch of sadness. Gratitude, I would like to thank all the loyal customers and principals who stuck with us over the past 25 years. Humbleness, in accomplishing such a major business milestone (half of all family business fail when the second generation takes control). I am also humbled as well to have worked with many great employees over the years who have helped us achieve this milestone and made my job fun at the same time. Lastly a tinge of sadness, in that my Father could not see his dream fulfilled. I give my dad all the credit in the world for leaving a secure salary and having the fortitude to start this business. I’m only steering the ship that he built 25 years ago.” Lee S. Johnson, Jr.

What makes our Agency different?
~Our staff, when my Father started the company he emphasized that the principals need to know that we are out working for them everyday. If the customer sends an order or inquiry directly to our principal how does the principal know that our agency generated that inquiry or order? They don’t, unless they ask and in some cases that does not always work either. My Father asked his customers to send all inquiries and order directly to him. My Father was one of the first agents to hire a fulltime office manger and inside sales staff to handle all the paperwork which allowed him to spend his time on the road making calls. To this day, 50% of our customers still send there inquires and orders through our office. When you call Lee S. Johnson Associates Inc. during normal business hours you get a live person answering the phone not some recording. Today, we have 2 inside staff members (Fran & Carol) and 2 outside staff ( Lee & Steve).
~Technology, we operate with latest technology so that we can stay in contact with both our customers and principals wherever we are. Steve and I both have cell phones (Verizon Dare) with email capabilities; we also each have laptop computers for Power Point presentations. Internally, we operate on the ACT software system for contact management and recently have had a server installed so that we can all easily access and efficiently share information about our customers. We have recently hired a computer consultant to keep us not only working efficiently but also helping us utilize what technology we already have to its fullest potential.
~Outside the industry thinking, we have recently hired a marketing firm and have reinvented ourselves in some areas in order to retain and attract new business. We have looked at other industries (pharmaceutical, technology, etc.) to see what successful business practices can be transported into ours.
~Loyalty, to both our customers and principals. We have relationships with both parties that eclipse the mere business ties. We have 2 principles that have been with us for the full 25 years! We have been with ¾ of our principals for more then 10 years! We took a customer survey about 5 years ago asking our customers a very stinging question- What value, if any, does our agency bring to your business? We sent this out to over 1,000 customers in our territory and received back a resounding 94% positive response that our agency brought “something to the table”. We encourage our customers to participate in our corporate sponsored social outings: golf, holiday parties, fishing trips, theater and sporting events etc. I have discovered over the years that meaningful relationships are established outside normal business hours.
~ Hard work, commitment and servicing the heck out of both our customers and principals. I think the fact that we are celebrating our 25th anniversary substantiates these actions.
The next 25 years:
Our tag line says it all- “Partnering for Growth”. Our goal is to make sure our customers grow, if they grow we grow. Twenty-five years of partnering with our customers has equated into twenty-five years of growth for this agency. Adapt and improve.
My sincere thanks to all of our customers and principals for sticking with us through these past 25 years!
Lee S. Johnson, Jr.
